iron removal media


Groundwater often contains dissolved ferrous/manganese bicarbonates (due to the presence of excess CO2) that cannot be filtered. Birm media plays an essential role by removing these dissolved Ferrous and Manganese ions. It is an insoluble catalyst that initiates the reaction between Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Ferrous/Manganese compounds. The Fe2+ ion undergoes quick reduction by converting to Fe3+ ion, thereby forming ferrous hydroxide precipitate which can easily be filtered and separated.

When used to reduce manganese, the water to be treated should have a pH between 8.0-9.0 and for iron, it should have pH above 6.5 for best results. If both manganese and iron are to be removed, the water to be treated should have a pH below 8.5.

  • The water should not contain oil, H2S and the organic concentration should not be more than 4-5ppm.
  • pH should be above 6.5. If not, the use of calcite or soda ash is suggested before using the birm media
  • Dissolved Oxygen (D.O.) content must be equal to at least 15% of the iron (or iron and manganese) content.
  • Chlorination and polyphosphates can coat the birm and reduce its efficacy. Thus the chemicals should be prior tested for backwashing before the use.


Eye contact : Flush with water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation occurs and persists, obtain medical attention.

Skin contact : Wash with plenty of soap and water. If irritation occurs and persists, obtain medical attention. Wash clothing before reuse.

Inhalation : Get fresh air. If breathing difficulty or discomfort occurs, call a physician.

Ingestion : Drink one to two glasses of water. Do not induce vomiting. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious individual. Call a physician immediately.
